Applications for Pennsylvania’s Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans’ Bonus Available April 4

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 3, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Applications for the Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans Benefit Program will be available beginning April 4, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs said today.

Pennsylvanias Persian Gulf Veterans now will be properly compensated for their service and sacrifice, just as service members who fought in WW I, WW II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War were compensated, said Major General Jessica L. Wright, the states adjutant general. We have worked long and hard to implement a process that will potentially handle 30,000-plus applications for the Persian Gulf Veterans Bonus and we are eager to put the first of many checks in the mail.

Act 29 of 2006 allows for compensation to be paid to eligible Pennsylvania Veterans, as well as certain surviving relatives of deceased Veterans. In each case, the service member must have:

-- Served with the U.S. Armed Forces, a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Pennsylvania National Guard.

-- Served on active duty in the Persian Gulf theater of operations during the period from Aug. 2, 1990, until Aug. 31, 1991, and received the Southwest Asia Service Medal.

-- Been a legal resident of Pennsylvania at the time of active service.

An eligible veteran or eligible beneficiary may receive a one-time benefit of $75 per month for each month of active service, up to $525, for which the veteran was eligible to receive the Southwest Asia Service Medal.

Survivors of those Veterans who lost their lives or died as a result of service-connected wounds, diseases or injuries received during the active period of service in the conflict and prisoners of war, may be eligible for payment of $5,000 in addition to benefits calculated based on months of active service.

Individuals who received a bonus or similar compensation from any other state are not eligible for the Pennsylvania program. The deadline for applying for benefits under this program is Aug. 31, 2015.
